Major Courses

CHIN A100 First Year Chinese I 3crs.

This is a beginning Mandarin Chinese course designed for students with no previous knowledge of Chinese.  Students learn basic Chinese characters, conversational skills, and entry-level Chinese grammar.  The course focuses on Chinese pinyin Romanization system, tones and pronunciation.

CHIN A101 First Year Chinese II 3crs.

This course is a continuation of CHIN A100.  The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening.  Reading and writing are developed in conjunction with oral skills.  The course aims to expand vocabulary and introduce more complex grammatical structures.  The course helps students expand the skills learned in CHIN A100.

Prerequisite: CHIN A100 or placement 

CHIN A200 Second Year Chinese I 3crs.

Students who have completed First Year Chinese (CHIN A100 and CHIN A101) continue to develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese.  The use of more complex communicative activities and readings on various topics are introduced.

Prerequisite: CHIN A101 or placement 

CHIN A201 Second Year Chinese II 3 crs.

This course further expands students' vocabulary base to permit reading of increasingly authentic texts from newspapers, journals and other sources and introduces writing assignments.  Emphasis is given to proficiency in the spoken and written language.
